Connect To Change
Eligibility
Indigenous Adults
Description:
Commercial tobacco use remains the leading cause of preventable disease and death in Canada and is the risk factor most strongly associated with preventable cancers. Among Indigenous peoples, commercial tobacco use rates are significantly higher: 2.4 times higher among Inuit, 1.9 times among First Nations living off reserve, and 1.7 times among Métis adults compared to non-Indigenous populations.
In response, the Canadian Cancer Society has partnered with three organizations across the country to offer Connect to Change—a free, 8-week, land- or water-based physical activity and cessation program designed for Indigenous participants who want to reduce or quit using commercial tobacco.
Connect to Change creates a culturally safe, respectful space where individuals can come together, share experiences, and support each other’s healing journey. Rooted in traditional teachings, ceremonies, and land-based practices, the program empowers participants to restore wellness while reconnecting with culture and community.
Each community will have trained Indigenous facilitators to guide the program, with a focus on both tobacco cessation and increased physical activity.
Participants will:
- Collaborate with a culturally competent group facilitator to develop personal goals and a quit plan
- Build connections with others through shared traditional activities such as beading, jigging, and gardening
- Attend weekly check-ins for support, guidance, and encouragement
- Receive six weeks of free nicotine replacement therapy
- Be referred to the Canadian Cancer Society’s Talk Tobacco program for personalized support via phone, online, or live chat from a culturally trained cessation specialist
Together, these elements create a powerful, supportive experience grounded in culture, community, and healing.
