Eligibility

To receive treatment at the Cancer Centre, you must be referred by your family physician or surgeon.

Description:

The Ottawa Hospital Cancer Centre is a cancer treatment and research facility providing cancer services to patients in Ottawa and Eastern Ontario. The treatment team consists of doctors (medical or radiation oncologists), surgeons, radiation therapists, nurses, physicists, social workers, pharmacists, medical technologists, and dietitians. Their services include:

Clinical Trials, Research: The Ottawa Hospital Cancer Centre conducts between 75 and 100 clinical trials for many different types and stages of cancer. If you are interested in taking part in a clinical trial, you should discuss this option with your physician.

Drug Reimbursement Coordinators, Financial: Speak to your oncologist to be referred to a drug reimbursement coordinator. A referral can also be made by a patients social worker.

Education: The Ninon Bourque Patient Resource library is dedicated to providing up-to-date, reliable cancer information to patients and their families. Pre-treatment information sessions are provided for both chemotherapy and radiation patients.

Sarcoma Program: Provide a full range of specialized sarcoma services.  Cancer experts on our team work with you to ensure you get the best care possible.

Screening, Early Detection, Diagnosis: The cancer centre is involved in the Ontario Breast Screening Program and the Women's Breast Health Centre.

Supportive Care/Psychosocial Oncology Program: The Ottawa Hospitals Cancer Centre's Psychosocial Oncology team consists of:

  • Social work
  • Dietitian
  • Physiotherapy
  • Kinesiology
  • Occupational Therapy
  • Psychiatry
  • Psychology
  • Speech-Language Pathology

The program provides group support, individual and family counseling. 

Treatment: Patient care at The Ottawa Hospital Cancer Centre is provided by a team of healthcare professionals who, along with the patient, decide which is the best treatment plan for each individual. The three main types of treatment for cancer are surgery, chemotherapy and radiation. The Ottawa Hospital is also involved in the Bone Marrow Transplant (BMT) Program.

Wellness Beyond Cancer Program: The Wellness Beyond Cancer Program (WBCP) is a cancer survivorship program currently available to breast, colorectal and endometrial cancer patients. Once you have finished your active cancer treatment, a multidisciplinary healthcare team ensures that you receive the education and resources you need to help regain a new sense of normal and deal with any side effects related to your treatment.
