Regional Cancer Care is the comprehensive cancer program for Northwestern Ontario, housed in the Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre.

Clinical Trials: Clinical trials are research studies that test possible new ways to prevent, detect, treat or manage cancer. Most of the standard cancer treatments used today were first shown to be effective through clinical trials. Participation in a clinical trial may be an option for a person with cancer or someone at risk for developing cancer.

Education: Regional Cancer Care has an excellent education program to meet the needs of patients, their families, health care professionals and the general public.

Early Detection and Screening: Cancer prevention and screening is an integral part of Regional Cancer Care at the at the Thunder Bay Regional Health Science Centre. Please see the website for more details.

Supportive Care, emotional support, counselling: At Regional Cancer Care, a supportive environment and guided assistance in receiving the right services at the most appropriate time are key components of effective care. A broad array of supportive care services are available for both patients and their families.

  • Patient and Family Orientation Session - offered twice a week, participants receive a free patient orientation booklet, learn about cancer services and resources and briefly tour the cancer centre.
  • Everyday Tools - a chronic disease management program that teaches practical skills for living a healthy life while undergoing or after treatment.
  • Northern Cancer Question and Answer - a monthly speakers series on a variety of current cancer topics.
  • Look Good, Feel Better Program and Chemotherapy Classes

Drug Assistance, Financial: Patients who require assistance related to drug costs can visit supportive care and speak to a social worker.

Palliative Care:  A broad array of supportive care services are available for both patients and their families at the centre.

Treatment: There are three main treatment options for cancer: chemotherapy, radiation therapy, and surgery. An oncologist will explain your treatment plan to you and can answer any questions you may have.
