Patient & Family Support (Psychosocial Oncology) Program
The diagnosis and treatment of cancer can be very difficult for those affected and their families. The Psychosocial Oncology Program at The Ottawa Hospital was established to provide you with the support you need to help you cope with the many challenges associated with cancer and its treatment. Our approach to care is holistic and aims to provide you with emotional, psychological, social, practical and rehabilitation support. Our services are confidential, and can be provided to you and/ or your family individually or in a group setting. You can access our services at The Ottawa Hospital Cancer Centre-General Campus and the Irving Greenberg Family Cancer Centre- located at the Queensway-Carleton Hospital. Our Services
You can come to us for a variety of supports, such as:
- Counselling
- Emotional support
- Practical assistance like (loss of income, etc…)
- Nutritional assessment and counselling
- Physical Rehabilitation
- Support group and/or education sessions

Supportive and Palliative Care Program
Supportive and Palliative Care is not only for those who are at the end of life or have advanced disease. Many people who are receiving treatment to control or even cure their disease may benefit from supportive and palliative care services. Our focus is on helping improve your quality of life by managing distressing symptoms related to your cancer journey. For more information click here.
Social Work
At The Ottawa Hospital, we understand that a new diagnosis, illness or hospitalization can be a very stressful experience. That’s why social workers are assigned to patient care areas across all The Ottawa Hospital campuses. For more information click here.

As part of the interdisciplinary health-care team, a social worker can provide a variety of services:
- Support and resources in the event of catastrophic or chronic illness
- Assistance with coping with diagnosis, illness or hospitalization
- Support for family members
