Hereditary Cancer Program
Eligibility
People with or without a personal diagnosis of cancer who meet Hereditary Cancer Program referral criteria. See website for current Referral Form and more details.
Description:
The Hereditary Cancer Program accepts referrals from doctors and nurse practitioners for BC/Yukon residents who may have inherited an increased risk for specific types of cancer. If a relative has already had hereditary cancer genetic testing, please include any details with a referral.
Interpreter services are available as needed, and consultation is now done primarily by phone. We provide genetic counselling to help people learn about hereditary forms of cancer, their own risk of developing cancer, options for cancer screening and/or risk reduction. Genetic testing (blood or saliva test) is offered when criteria are met for a specific hereditary cancer syndrome(s) and is discussed in a genetic counselling appointment.
When a referral is received, the next steps may include:
- requesting additional information from referring provider and/or patient
- contacting the patient directly to book a genetic counselling appointment
- a letter to confirm the patient is on a waiting list to book a genetic counselling appointment
- a letter to inform the referring provider and patient that no appointment will be booked
When our consultation is complete, the referring provider and patient will receive a written summary.
